Ambergris, a waxy substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales, is still used as a fragrance fixative in certain high-end segments. Its trade is not uniformly banned: legality varies according to national jurisdictions.
The 1986 moratorium ended large-scale commercial whaling, but several countries continue to hunt whales under different regimes (scientific whaling, aboriginal subsistence whaling, moratorium reserves). Norway, Japan, Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland are explicitly cited by The Animal Fund as potential sources of whale-derived ingredients for the cosmetic industry.

European cosmetic regulation and animal-derived ingredients
In the European Union, cosmetic regulation strictly governs the permitted raw materials. Products derived from species protected by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) cannot legally enter the composition of a cosmetic marketed in Europe.

In the European market, no established brand lipstick contains whale fat. The contrary claim is misinformation. Globally, the situation is less clear: cetacean-derived ingredients still circulate in certain segments, mainly perfumery using ambergris and local markets supplied by countries that continue whaling.
The question is therefore not binary. The myth is false for beauty products sold in Europe and North America. It retains a kernel of reality for geographical niches and specific ingredients that media shortcuts do not distinguish.
